According to the Port Administration, a MAZ truck carrying metal scrap was detained at the Port checkpoint after Yantar radiation monitor alarmed. The Fish Port guards checked the truck three times, and every time the truck was checked, excessive radiation was detected.
The accident was reported to the Customs Point, which was followed by the arrival of radiation control specialists. The dosimeter they brought with them detected excessive radiation as well. The cargo was bound for a company renting a metal scrap storage area near Berth 37 and close to fish refrigerators, vessels and warehouses.
The accident was confirmed by the Murmansk Region Emergency Cases Agency. The Agency spokesperson specified that after the truck had been detained in the Port, it was forwarded to the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station for closer inspection, which revealed radiation of about 700 μR/h.
